In the current academic year in Delhi, the no detention policy will persist, ensuring automatic promotion to the next grade for students in classes I to VIII who participate in all mid-term and annual examinations. The Directorate of Education has released the promotion policy for the 2022-2023 academic session across all schools in Delhi. Despite amendments to the Delhi Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Rules 2011 last month, allowing for the implementation of a detention policy, the no-detention policy will continue for this academic year.

An education department official mentioned that since the academic session has already commenced, the implementation of the detention policy will not take effect midway for students. The introduction of such a policy is anticipated in the subsequent academic session, namely the 2023-2024 academic year.

For classes I to VIII, a mid-term and an annual examination will be conducted. Students who appear in all subjects in both exams will be automatically declared as ‘promoted.’ Those who appear in one or more subjects but are absent from the rest in either of the exams will receive provisional promotion, with the condition “to appear in mid-term or annual exam.” Students absent in all subjects in both exams will be categorized as “withheld due to long absence.”
