In Delhi, students of Class IX and XI will be promoted to the next grade based on a comprehensive evaluation, considering mid-term tests, annual examinations, and projects or practicals, with the provision of awarding up to 15 grace marks in any subject to ensure a passing grade. This promotion policy has been introduced by the education department for the current academic session.

Since 2020, modified promotion policies have been implemented for these grades due to pandemic-induced school closures and the resulting disruptions in the teaching-learning process. Although schools for classes IX to XII have been permitted to open since February 7 this year, a number of institutions have conducted their final examinations in an offline mode.

While many schools have adopted offline examinations, the department emphasizes the importance of parental consent for students participating in these exams. Students who have not taken part in their school’s offline examinations due to a lack of parental consent are required to appear for offline exams conducted by their respective schools after March 31. Starting April 1, online attendance will no longer be an option for students.

Schools that conducted their final exams in a blended mode are allowed to compute results based on students’ scores in these examinations. To pass, students must achieve a minimum of 33% marks in each of their main subjects, considering their mid-term, annual exam, and practicals or project marks. Those who do not meet this criterion can opt to take compartment examinations, which will be conducted offline after March 31.

All schools, both government and private, are instructed to adhere to this policy. However, private schools wishing to establish criteria differing from the issued guidelines must seek approval from the education department.
